John Peter Crabb (1843-1901) – Blacksmith, Born in Gratz

JOHN CRABB DEAD

John P. Crabb, an old colored Grand Army man, of 626 North Street, [Harrisburg], died yesterday afternoon at his home.  Mr. Crabb was a blacksmith by trade and one of the most active men in Post 520, G.A.R., being one of its early commanders.  He had been sick for over a year.  The funeral services have not yet been arranged, as the family will wait until the arrival of one of the deceased man’s sons from Philadelphia.  He is survived by two sons and two daughters.

Note:  John Peter Crabb was born in Gratz, about October 1843, the son of Peter Crabb, (1787-1860), a blacksmith and one of the earliest settlers of Gratz, and Mary Magdalena Crabb (1804-?).  It is believed John Peter’s parents are buried in the Crabb family plot in the Gratz Union Cemetery in unmarked graves.  A brother, Edward Crabb, is buried in Gratz in the family plot, was also a Civil War veteran, and until recently was not recognized as a war veteran from the community.

The obituary is from the Harrisburg Telegraph, 13 July 1901.
