Deed for Land for Lykens Valley Pioneer Monument, 1918

A copy of both sides of the 7 September 1918 deed conveying a plot of land, 10 foot by 12 foot, in Washington Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, to W. H. G. Hoffman representing the Hoffman Family Association [a.k.a. Hoffman Family Reunion], for the purpose of erecting a monument in memory of John Peter Hoffman, who landed in Philadelphia, 3 September 1739, and is buried near Loyalton, Dauphin County.  It was believed that the plot of land was the exact burial place of John Peter Hoffman and twenty-six of his contemporaries, all pioneer settlers of the Lykens Valley.

The grantors were Elmer W. Romberger and his wife Bertha M. Romberger, farmers in Washington Township.

Conditions that the grantee had to agree to were that the monument would be kept in proper repair and any damages to the adjoining land resulting from entry would be paid for the grantee.  The grantor would have the right to farm to the line of the said 10 x 12 tract.

The pad for the monument was constructed in 1918 and the initial plans were to erect the monument in July 1919.  However, the monument was not placed on the base until 1924 and was formally dedicated on Thanksgiving Day, 27 November 1924.
