Joel A. Dinger (1920-1946) – Killed in Plane Crash in Georgia

TOWER CITY PILOT KILLED IN PLANE CRASH

Captain Joel A. Dinger, 26, pilot in the U. S. Army Air Forces, son of Mrs. Maria Dinger, Tower City, R. D., was killed in the crash of an army plane near Albany, Georgia.

Captain Dinger enlisted in the service in September 1939, and qualified as a bombing plane pilot in January 1942.  Later he served with the Eighth Air Force in England.  While on a bombing mission over Germany in July 1943, he sustained a wound of his right foot when his plane was shot down, and he was made a prisoner of war in Germany.  He was held prisoner until liberated 21 months later by American forces.

He was a graduate of Porter Township High School, Reinerton, class of 1938.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Stephen Shibe, of Orwin, and two brothers, Leroy Dinger, student at Temple University, Philadelphia, and Henry Dinger, at home.

Funeral services were held in the Orwin Union Church, Saturday afternoon, with the Rev. Lloyd Beamesderfer, pastor of the Tower City United Brethren Church, officiating.  Interment was made in the United Brethren Cemetery at Orwin.

Military rites were in charge of the Harry Haertter Post of American Legion, Tower City.
