Joanna Ruth Wise (1934-1941) – Fatally Wounded in Shooting

FATALLY WOUNDED IN SHOOTING ACCIDENT

Joanna Wise, seven-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Wise of Saylorsburg R. D., Monroe County, was fatally wounded when a shotgun in the hands of her brother, Wayne Wise, 10, was accidentally discharged.  The accident occurred on the farm of their parents, Friday afternoon.

The family formerly resided in Elizabethville.

According to information received here, the boy had take a 20-gauge shot gun which was kept in the barn for the purpose of shooting rats, to go groundhog hunting.  The boy told his parents that his sister had followed him some distance from the house and that the weapon was discharged as he turned to tel her to stay at home.

The boy ran to the house to tell an older sister Shirley Wise of the accident, and she in turn called a physician and notified the parents, who were not at home at the time.  The child however, had died almost immediately.

Survivors are the parents and the following brothers and sisters:  Shirley Wise; June Wise; Faye Wise; Richard Wise; and Wayne Wise, all at home; and the grandparents, Grant Whitmyre, of Saylorsburg R. D.; and Mr. and Mrs. B. Frank Wise, of Elizabethville.

Funeral services were held from the residence Monday afternoon and interment was made at Broadheadsville, Monroe County.
