Lizzie [Dietrich] Cook (1903-1990) & Her Brother Walter Dietrich (1899-1971)

An undated snapshot photograph said to be of Lizzie [Dietrich] Cook (1903-1990) and her brother Walter Dietrich (1899-1971), the children of Walter Dietrich (1877-1936) and his wife Emma [Morgan] Dietrich (1879-1916).  On the back of the photo the following is written:  “Walter Dietrich and sister Lizzie Dietrich Cook.”

There is a strong possibility that at leas one of the individuals in this photo is incorrectly identified.

The woman appears to be much older than the man – perhaps a generation older!

Lizzie [Dietrich] Cook was the Dietrich family historian who produced an early mimeographed history of the Dietrich descendants of Philip Dietrich (1794-1871).  Most people in the family knew her and it is unlikely that the photograph is of her.

There was another Lizzie Dietrich (1863-1936) who was Walter Dietrich‘s (1877-1936) sister.  That Lizzie married twice – to Albert Travitz and Burden Martz.  It is possible that the young Walter Dietrich (1899-1971) is pictured her with his Aunt Lizzie sometime around the time that his mother, Emma [Morgan] Dietrich died in 1916.  Aunt Lizzie lived in Lykens, Dauphin County, and her nephew lived there as well.

Are there any blog readers who can solve this mystery?

Is this Walter Dietrich the same who settled on a farm north of Sacramento? I remember him and his family. I have some descendants of that Walter Dietrich in class.

I don’t think so. There were several persons named Walter Dietrich. The one pictured here lived around Lykens Borough most of his life and is buried there in the POSA Cemetery. The one you are thinking of might be Walter Henry Dietrich (1924-2007) who is in the 1940 Census for Hubley Township. He’s buried in Salem Cemetery at Rough & Ready. However, the two are related. Walter Dietrich (pictured) was Walter Henry Dietrich’s grandfather.
