Mary Elizabeth Kessler (1951-1953) – Killed By Ice Cream Truck

CHILD LOSES LIFE WHEN HIT BY TRUCK

Mary Elizabeth Kessler, 21-month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Kessler, was killed when hit by an ice cream truck in the driveway of her home in Mifflin Township, west of Berrysburg, Monday Afternoon.

State Police who investigated the accident, said the truck was operated by Anthony Wise of Harrisburg.

Wise, it was stated, had made a delivery at the Kessler home, and was about to leave when he saw a toy wagon in front of the truck.  He removed the wagon and started to drive away, but stopped his truck after moving only a short distance, upon hearing the cries of the father.

The child and Mr. Kessler had been in the barn, and the driver was unaware she had left him until he heard the father’s warning cries.

Wise and Mr. Kessler took the child to the office of Dr. A. A. Horn, Gratz, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.  She had suffered a fractured scull and other injuries.

Survivors are her parents, two brothers, James Kessler and Richard Kessler, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Moses Kessler of Sacramento, and James Klinger of Valley View.

Services will be held from the Buffington Funeral Home, Valley View, at 10 o’clock this Thursday morning, with further services in Klinger’s Church at Erdman, Rev. Dr. D. I. Sultzbach, pastor of Sacramento Lutheran Parish will officiate and interment will be in the cemetery adjoining the church.
