The announcement that a shirt factory would be established in Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, was made in the “Gratz News” column of the Lykens Register, 1 August 1902:
The Gratz Shirt Manufacturing Company has organized and is fast preparing the building on South Alley in which to place the machinery which will soon be here. They expect to have the factory in operation in a few weeks.
This is new to our town, and we hope it is the beginning for many more industries to come our way. The company is composed of citizens of this place.
It is not known if this factory was ever in operation, nor has the indicated location on South Alley been identified. It was not until 1911 that a successful shirt factory was opened in Gratz, and its establishment was due to the coming of the Midland Pennsylvania Railroad, a railroad that failed.
