John G. Swab, carpenter, was born in Washington Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, 20 March 1831, a son of George Swab and Catharine [Umholtz] Swab.
The father, George Swab, was born in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, 9 February 1802, and early in life learned the carpenter trade, which he followed all his life. He died at Elizabethville, July 1888, and his wife in 1863. They are both buried at St. John’s Cemetery. In politics he was a Republican and served one term as constable and as supervisor several terms. His children were:

Catharine Swab;
Elizabeth Swab;
Joseph Swab;
George Swab;
David Swab; and
Mary Swab.
John G. Swab first attended the subscription and then for eight years the public schools. At the age of sixteen he began to learn the carpenter trade with his father, with whom he worked four or five years. After working at his trade in various places for a few years he went west in company with Isaac Yeager. Both soon found employment at Warren, Illinois. After building a number of houses in that state, Mr. Swab went to Mansfield, Ohio, but failing to secure employment returned home in February, 1855. He then began working in Lykens, Pennsylvania, and later moved to Pine Valley, and from there to Swatara Township, where he and his family resided seven years. They next came to Dauphin County and located near Halifax, where they lived eleven years, during which time they were engaged in farming. On 28 March 1878, Mr. Swab located on the old homestead, which he purchased from his father and has since divided his time between farming and doing carpenter work.
He was married in Schuylkill County, in 1856, to Miss Rachael Shucker, daughter of David Shucker. Their children are:

John Swab;
Mary Ann Swab;
Sarah Catharine Swab;
George Harrison Swab; and
Emma Jane Swab.
In politics, Mr. John G. Swab is a Republican and held the office of assessor in 1886, and was tax collector for two terms. He is strongly inclined toward the United Brethren church, but is not connected with any denomination.
