Gratz Fire Company Gets New Truck, 1940

A February 15, 1940 newspaper photograph of the new fire truck put into operation by the Gratz Fire Company, Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

The following article appeared in the Elizabethville Echo of that same date:

Delivery of a new ninety-five horsepower Ford fire truck was made to the Gratz Fire Company on Monday of this week.

Equipment of the company’s former truck was mounted on the new chassis at the factory in Anderson, Indiana. It includes among other equipment, a pump and booster tank, and is capable of carrying more than a thousand feet of fire hose. Purchase was made through the George C. Adams Agency of Gratz.

Officials of the Gratz Fire Company are: Harry Kissinger, president; Melvin Herb, vice president; Daniel Koppenhaver, secretary; William Reed, treasurer.

  • Fire Chief: William Hoke.
  • First Assistant Chief: Ralph Witmer.
  • Second Assistant Chief: Charles Schoffstall.
  • Foreman” Marlin Umholtz.
  • First Assistant Foreman: Peter Stine.
  • Second Assistant Foreman: Forrest Hess.
  • Drivers: Clarence Miller; Robert Rothermel; Norman Sitlinger; Harold Spotts.
  • Trustees: John Kissinger; William Steely; Charles Weis.

The company was organized in 1924.
