COLONEL GILBERT OF HALIFAX WINS THREE DECORATIONS
Pennsylvania’s first native son to be three times decorated for special services in the United States Army is Lieutenant-Colonel Harold Gilbert, of Halifax last Thursday following receipt of word from the War Department that he had won the Distinguished Service Medal for his work in directing the half-million volunteer recruiting program. The other two decorations Lieutenant Colonel Gilbert wears are:
The Distinguished Service Cross for heroism displayed in Mezy, France, July 10, 1918, as a Lieutenant in the 13th United States Infantry, Third Division, when under machine gun fire he rescued wounded men from under enemy guns. A few days later he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action.
The Halifax born officer attended Pennsylvania State College and Bucknell University, where he was an all-around athlete and a football star. While in the Army coached all-star Army teams.
