Lykens – Baptist Church Minstrel Show, 1938

A news article from the Lykens Standard, 25 February 1938, reported an upcoming minstrel show to be held in Lykens, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, to support the re-building fund for the Transfiguration Baptist Church. The mention of the “funny end men” and “antics” refers to local white men who performed in black-face.

Baptist Minstrel Staged in Sholley’s Auditorium Tonight.

The energetic theatrically-inclined group who have been going the “rounds” during the during the past four weeks in preparation for the staging of the “Big Broadcast Minstrel” under the auspices of the Transfiguration Baptist Church, Lykens, to assist in liquidating the church debt of rebuilding following the loss sustained by fire several months ago, report everything in readiness for the initial showing tonight in Sholley’s Auditorium, Lykens.

The production will be somewhat new inasmuch as the circle will be composed of both male and female chorusters with the traditionally funny end men who are prepared to “spring” their antics which are sure to provide tremendous applause….

The article went on to identify the complete cast of characters, including the end-men who performed in black-face: Clarence Minnich; Hen Klinger; Asa Romberger; and Bob Pickup.
