A one man community business institution is now history in Valley View. Sam Paul, who will be 80 years young on his next birthday, September 9, has pulled his wagon for the last time and has retired from business.
For years, Sam was an always expected sight anywhere from Fountain to Gratz, always on foot and doggedly dragging a bulging wagon load of knick-knacks. Despite what you think, Sam was a success in his own particular way. He enjoyed his work, but did not care to make a million bucks, and was a shrewd judge of human nature as well as a persuasive salesman. For our part, we always got a real hang out of doing business with him. He was one of The Valley Citizen‘s first advertisers and carried an ad in every issue since 1929. Most of the time, we traded advertising dollars for soap from Sam, but we needed it.
Happy, relaxing Sam, you earned it. And for those of you who may have wondered what the suffix initials “D.S.L.” stood for after the name Sam Paul… we can admirably say, “Direct Selling Legion.”

Samuel Paul Passes Away
Samuel Paul, 79, of Valley View, known throughout the Hegins Valley area as the Salesman who carried his household wares on a hand wagon, died on Sunday evening, August 24 in Pottsville Hospital after a length illness.
Mr. Paul, a native on Rough and Ready, was born on September 19, 1878, a son of the late Elias Paul and Elizabeth [Reed] Paul.
A member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and Sunday School of Valley View, he carried on his unique business for 25 years, He was the last member of his immediate family.
Surviving are nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon from the Buffington Funeral Home, Valley View. Interment was made in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery at Valley View. Rev. Burlington B. Latshaw Jr., pastor of the Trinity Church, officiated.
