Gratz Sues Road Construction Company, 1927

GRATZ SUES CONSTRUCTION COMPANY

Some contention has arisen between the Gratz Fire Company, and the Borough Council against the Lincoln Construction Company, over certain obstructions caused by the improvements being made in the streets of the town.

The Lincoln Contruction Company, which contracted to build the concrete road through Main Street, began their work about two months ago and deep ditches were dug for laying drainage pipes. So as not to inconvenience traffic, the remaining earth was pushed to the side, close to the fire plugs, almost completely covering some and making it very inconvenient and in some cases impossible for a fire truck to make connections.

A ruling of the Pennsylvania Department of Highways prohibits the parking of any automobile within a certain distance of any fire plug and also rules that no other obstructions or hindrance to fire engines shall be at or near any fire plugs.

Because of a pile of ground and rocks around the plug on the corner of Main and Center Streets, the Pillow Fire Company experienced difficulty in making connections on the night the Gratz High School was badly damaged by fire. As a result the Fire Company and Council and the Construction Company have arrived at this dispute.

Orders have been given by the Fire Company for the immediate removal of the hindrance, and unless the demands are fulfilled within a reasonable time, further legal action is threatened by the compaintants.
