Solomon Rettinger (1834-1899) and Susanna Rickert (1833-1911)

rettingersolomon-family-001a

Solomon Rettinger was born 28 October 1834 in Lykens Township, probably in Specktown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, the son of Jacob Rettinger (1813-1890) and Catherine [Hoover] Rettinger (1812-1883).  On 24 August 1852, he married Susanna [Rickert] Rettinger, who was born in Specktown, Lykens Township, 1 July 1833, the daughter of Martin Rickert (1804-1871) and Elizabeth “Betsy” [Yerges] Rickert (1813-1877).  Solomon and Susanna had at least 10 children together.  Solomon died of heart disease on 31 July 1899.  Susanna died on 24 December 1911.

Identifications for the Solomon Rettinger family portrait are:

Front Row (seated):  (#1) Solomon Rettinger; (#2) Henry Rettinger; (#3) Solomon Rettinger, the father; (#4) Susanna “Susan” [Rickert] Rettinger, the mother; (#5) Sarah Alice [Rettinger] Bailey; (#6) William Howard Rettinger.

Back Row (standing):  #7) Accadonne Lilly “Agnes” [Rettinger] Koppenhaver-Bitterman; (#8) Jacob Howard/Martin Rettinger; (#9) Daniel M. Rettinger; (#10) James Franklin Rettinger; (11) Samuel Jonsan Rettinger; (#12) Ida Louisa [Rettinger] Bitterman;

Based on the age of the youngest child, William, who was born 27 October 1874, and appears to be about 6 to 8 years old, the photograph was taken around 1881.

Corrections and additions should be submitted as comments.
