Gratz News – Mid-April 1944

The following news briefs were published in the “Gratz News” section of a local newspaper, probably in mid-April 1944:

Mrs. Amanda Coleman of Lykens spent a few days of last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hess.

Mrs. Clarion Strauss of Harrisburg spent the week-end at the home of her sister, Mrs. Earl F. Hoffman.

Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Klinger, son Jack Klinger, from Millersburg, spent Saturday evening visiting among relatives of this place.

Mr. and Mrs. William Auman of Sunbury spent Sunday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Clark and family.

Mr. and Mrs. Jay Lahr, of Elizabethville spent Saturday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Umholtz and family.

Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Klinger of Lykens spent Sunday at the home of Miss Grace Williard.

Mrs. Amanda Coleman, daughter Ruth Coleman, of Sacramento, spent some time during the week at the home of her brother, Harry Umholtz.

Mr. Allen Miller and daughter of Valley View; Mrs. Annetta H. Coleman of Sacramento; Mrs. James Miller, Mrs. Fred Hoffe and sons, Grace Williard and John Brackinridge of Harrisburg were visitors at the home of Mrs. Jennie Buffington and family.

Rev. and Mrs. L. A. Zechman of Elizabethville called in town here during the week.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Straub sons Jimmie Straub and Jean Straub of Middle River, Maryland, spent last week-end at the home of the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Wiest and family.

Mr. and Mrs. George Klinger, son Glenn Klinger, spent last Sunday at the home of the former’s brother at Fearnot.

Mr. and Mrs. James Wiest and children made a trip to Elizabethville on last Wednesday.

Mrs. Kate Harman of Hegins is spending sometime at the home of her son, Edward Hartman and family.

Mrs. Raymond Rowe, Mrs. Raymond Holwig, Miss Lena Smeltz, Miss Ruth Knohr and Miss Hannah Riegel spent a few days visiting at New York.

Easter Sunday visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schminky and family were Mrs. Ralph Schminky, children Joan Schminky and Janet Schminky and Miss Helen Maurer of Hegins; Mr. and Mrs. Herald Smith, Williamstown; Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Hepler, children John Hepler and George Hepler, John Clark, Gratz; Gordon Schminky, son Schminky of Philadelphia and Leroy Swartz of Ickesburg.

Mrs. Joseph Schminky, children Carol Schminky, Bonnie Schminky, and John Michael Schminky, spent Sunday at the home of Leroy Williams and family at Dauphin.

Misses Hannah Clark and Hannah Umholtz spent Monday at Harrisburg.

Miss Helen Care spent the weekend at her home in Harrisburg.

Mrs. Helen Hain returned to her home Saturday after spending sometime at the Geisinger Hospital at Danville.
