Milton Scheib (1878-1934) – Fatal Injuries From Being Hit By Auto

AUTO INJURIES PROVE FATAL TO HEGINS RESIDENT

Injuries received when struck by an automobile in Hegins last Tuesday evening proved fatal to Milton Scheib, 58, prominent resident of that community. Scheib died in the Fountain Springs Hospital, Ashland, Wednesday evening.

Mr. Scheib was walking to the Hegins Township High School where he was to attend a first aid meeting. In crossing the highway, it is believed he became confused and is said to have stepped into the path of an automobile alleged to have been operated by Chester Kalbach of Frackville. Scheib was taken to the office of a Hegins physician for first aid treatment and was admitted to the hospital the same evening.

Mr. Scheib was born in Hegins Township, March 29, 1878, the son of Mrs. Catharine Scheib and the late Henry Scheib. Until the closing of the mines several years ago he had been employed at the Good Springs Colliery.

Survivors are his mother, five sisters and five brothers: Mrs. Earl Stutzman, Washington, D. C.; Mrs. Calvin Fredericks, Lebanon; Mrs. Edward Keim, Mrs. William Wagner and Mrs. William Bensinger of Valley View; Frank Scheib, of Good Springs; John Scheib and Daniel Scheib of Hegins; George Scheib of Valley View and Riley Scheib of Muir.

Funeral services were held from his mother’s home Sunday afternoon and interment made at that place.

Absolved At Inquest

At an inquest conducted in Valley View Tuesday night, a coroner’s jury declared the accident the accident to have been unavoidable and absolved Kalbach of responsibility.
