A 1917 photograph of the two railroad stations of Elizabethville, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania – the 1858 station (to the left, partially shown), and the 1872 station, shown with the west-facing end on South Market Street. Double tracks are between the two buildings. The men who are seen in the photo are not identified. The date at which the covered porch was added to the west side of the building is not known, but it is not seen on earlier photographs and, according to later photographs, was removed, date unknown.
The photograph was taken as part of a survey of railroad structures conducted by the Interstate Commerce Commission to determine the feasibility of consolidating resources of smaller rail companies into larger regional systems in order to improve operational efficiency. The consolidation never took place. All the photographs taken at that time are housed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The one shown here is partially damaged due to less than optimal storage conditions.
