Amos Buffington Farm, 1875

The old barn and house located between the hairpin bend of the Wiconisco Creek in the southwest corner of Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, were located on the property of 75 acres that belonged to Amos Buffington in 1875, as shown on the map below (circled in red).

The land at this location was originally warranted to Leonard Miller in 1751.  Eventually it passed to Andrew Riegel Sr., a soldier in the Revolutionary War, who maintained a sawmill there.  Magdalena Riegel, daughter of Andrew Riegel Sr. and wife of John Bressler, received some of the acreage in 1819, but Bressler died in 1822.  Included in Magdalena’s holding were a small house and access to the waterways.  Subsequently, several families owned portions or all of the property, and by 1875, 75 acres of it belonged to Amos Buffington.

The sawmill can be seen on the map above, just to the right of the “ton” in “Buffington.”

According to information with the barn and house picture, supposedly taken in the late 1990s, the buildings were “destroyed” in 2005, when the property was owned by Keith E. Masser and Helen Masser.  It is not known when they were originally constructed.
