ETHEL MARY HALL YEAGER
HALIFAX – Ethel Mary [Hall] Yeager, 96, of Carlisle, formerly of Halifax, passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2016, at the Thornwald Home in Carlisle.
She was born September 25, 1919 in Harrisburg, PA to the late Mary Elizabeth Coss and Leslie Holbert Hall. She was the widow of the late Lester R. Yeager to whom she was happily married for 44 years. She is preceded in death by her daughter Mary Ethel Nicholson and her brother Robert L. Hall.
Ethel graduated in 1936 from the William Penn High School in Harrisburg. She attended Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina for two years in 1937 – 1939. During World War II she was a civilian employee for the War Department working in the Supply Division in Middletown, Pennsylvania, After the war Ethel was a homemaker and was a part time student at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown where she obtained her B.A. degree in 1958. She also completed certified educational courses at Duke University, Pennsylvania State University, and Bucknell University. Ethel’s teaching career started in a one-room school house in the Halifax School District in the 1950s. After several years she took a position in the high school with the Millersburg School District teaching history and English literature, and also served as the head of the Language Department. Ethel taught for 28 years before retiring in 1982.
Ethel is a member of Halifax United Methodist Church, Halifax, and an associate member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carlisle. She is a member of D.K.G. (Delta Kappa Gamma), P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization), Hershey Chapter No. 509 Order of Eastern Star, Halifax Historical Society, and the Halifax Area Garden Club.
Ethel is survived by her grandson, Ethan Yeager Nicholson of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, nieces Jeannette Zapushek of Racine, Wisconsin and Lorie Seaman of Hummelstown, PA, and nephew Keith Hall of Unionville, Pennsylvania, and her son-in-law, Gary L. Nicholson of Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff at Thornwald Home for the loving care they gave to Ethel for the past 4 years.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 22 at the Halifax United Methodist Church with Rev. Dale Parker officiating.
Interment will be immediately after the services in the Halifax United Methodist Church Cemetery.
There will be a viewing from 10 am until the time of service. A time of fellowship will follow interment at the Halifax United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial contributions be made in memory of Ethel Yeager to either the Halifax United Methodist Church, 105 Wind Hill Drive, Halifax, Pennsylvania 17032 or St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 West Louther Street, Carlisle, PA 17013.
