Lykens Valley Coal Company – Short Mountain Mine Tunnel, 1853-1869

A picture post card view of the entrance to the Short Mountain Mine Tunnel at Bear Gap, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.  This tunnel was in operation from 1853 to 1869 and was the second mining tunnel created by the Lykens Valley Coal Company.  The tunnel provided westwardly access to coal under Short Mountain.

The post card is entitled, “All Aboard for the Mine Tunnel, Lykens, Pennsylvania,” and is undated.  A group of unidentified miners pose atop the empty coal cars as they are readied to be pulled into the mine by a team of mules.

This tunnel, and its companion tunnel on the opposite side of Bear Gap, were replaced by two slopes erected in 1870, which cut in a northwardly direction toward Coal or Thick Mountain.

Corrections and additional information should be added as comments to this post.
