An undated aerial view of the Short Mountain Colliery of the Lykens Valley Coal Company, taken some time prior to the completion of the electrical plant in 1921. The colliery was located in Bear Gap, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The smoke coming from various buildings on the site is an indication that the photo is from the era when all machinery was steam powered.
The camera is pointed south and Berry Mountain is in the distance. The large, white puff of smoke coming from the building just left of center, is near the location of the Short Mountain Slope which was in operation from 1870 to 1915. Short Mountain is seen to the right, and the old Short Mountain Tunnel entrance is located on the side, near the base of the mountain. The tunnel was used for mining operations from 1853 to 1870.
