Rev. Samuel Dubendorf – Reformed Minister of the Lykens Valley

Rev. Samuel Dubendorf served as minister of David’s Church, Killinger, Dauphin County, from 1779-1789 and again from 1795-1799..

____________________________

Rev. Samuel Dubendorf was born in Stettin, Germany, October 21, 1771. He served several charges in Germany before coming to America in 1775. Dr. Harbaugh thinks that Mr. Dubendorf served as Chaplain while aboard ship with the mercenary Hessian troops. Rev. Mr. Dubendorf was a bachelor.

He became the pastor of the Church in Germantown, which he served for about two years. Recorded in the Minutes of Coetus held at Philadelphia, May 9, 1781, are these interesting facts: “This old gentleman had the misfortune to come over with the Hessian troops and remained for quite a time among the British in New York. Therefore he was suspected of siding with the British, and lost the confidence of the people of Germantown.” He came to David’s Church in 1779, served here for ten years, took a charge in Carlisle for six years and returned to David’s to serve another four years.

Mr. Nevin E. Dubendorf, Moore Street, Millersburg, has in his possession Rev. Mr. Dubendorf’s old Bible.

Woodcut image is not of Rev. Dubendorf, but represents a typical preacher of the era. No actual image of him has been located as of this posting.
