Lykens – Commercial Hotel, 1952

A 1952 photograph of the Commercial Hotel, Lykens, Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania.

Individuals standing and sitting in front of the hotel are not identified.

Photo provided by William McDonnell, grand-nephew of Wally Ziegler and Betty Ziegler who were owner-operators of the hotel in the 1950s and 1960s.

    Looking at the cars the photo is later than 1952. Perhaps late 50’s ??

      Ed, I believe you are correct as I think that’s a 59 Olds on the left. Late 50s or early 60s. The guy with the hat sitting with the bulldog is my great-uncle Wallace Ziegler, co-owner of the hotel. My great-aunt Betty (Fritz) Ziegler was a life long resident of Lykens. They lived at 773 Main St which my great-grand-parents built in 1903.

        Yes, I remember “Aunt Betty”. Back in the day we would stop and pick her up to go to mass a few blocks up the street. The Aunt Betty came from Theresa Kelley Hassinger, who called her Aunt Betty. Theresa lived in Loyalton, and was a friend of my mom Martha. And that is the rest of the story

          My Aunt Theresa spoke fondly of her friend Martha many times. My second son Timothy Eugene is named for Theresa’s husband Gene.
