County Fire Convention in Lykens, 1936

A newspaper photo of a 1936 fire engine published in the Lykens Standard, May 1, 1936, with an article on the upcoming County Fire Convention planned for Lykens in June. No caption appeared with the photo to indicate the type of fire apparatus, to what volunteer group it belonged, or when the photo was taken.

LIBERTY HOSE COMPANY TO BE HOST

The firemen in the Lower End of the County are making extensive plans for the largest representation ever to attend a County Convention.  City Commissioner of Fire, J. Calvin Frank predicts that the Lykens Convention will be one long to be remembered for years to come.   “You bet I’ll be there” said Commissioner Frank when queries a few days ago by the writer.  “From all indications it certainly looks like Lykens is about to stage a real old-fashioned good time, and every effort will be made to provide as many firemen as possible to have a part in it,” he continued.

A report from the local committee yesterday said that all programs are running along smoothly and with clock-like precision.  Of course there still remained many little problems to be solved, and each and every last one of them will in due course and time be met and decided.  There are many, many surprises in store for the unsuspecting public next June, so get ready for the best time ever staged in the borough.

The standing of the Queen Contest is as follows:

Are you doing the very best in the interest of your candidate?  Is that girl whom you have determined to be selected, getting the best of your assistance and help?  This is certainly the biggest even of its kind ever attempted locally and is naturally entitles to the fullest measure of support from each and every last interested person in the entire county.  The Queen Committee comprised of  Chairman Jacob M. Gratz, Adam L. Welker and John F. Whitman, are letting nothing undone in the great undertaking.  Photographs of the several candidates have been turned in and will soon appear in many of the Pennsylvania Dailies, watch for them.  Patronize the various functions sponsored by these contestants.  Help them to pile up votes in their sincere effort to top off the big affair with crowning success next June.  Help them to pile up votes in their sincere effort to top off the big affair with crowning success next June.

The important committee scheduled next in real action has been definitely organized,  the Soliciting Committee.  Meet their appeal with open hearts.  Respond and show the local firemen just how much we all appreciate their good work.

Concession space is fastly being planned and tentatively allotted.  Countless vendors are in daily touch with this important committee, and from present outlook, Lykens will be a literal fair-midway when the Volunteer Firemen of Dauphin County strut down Main Street to the tune of blaring brass bands, cheers and deafening noise next June 13th, all graciously presided over by our own selected sovereign of beauty, the Queen.
