Lykens – Budd Theatre Features “The Sound of Music,” 1969

The theatre poster for The Sound of Music, a film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1965 and which had by 1969 achieved the record for the longest continuous run of any motion picture in history. The continuous run was achieved by theatres re-booking the film one or more times during that period.

The Budd Theatre in Lykens, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, had its “return engagement” in 1969, and one ad for that showing appeared in the Lykens Standard, June 19, 1969.

As stated in the ad, the showing was the “last show for the summer,” Friday and Saturday, June 20 and June 21, “one show each night at 7:30 p. m.,” with admission at 50 cents and $1.00.

At the end of its run, the film was said to gross $286 million worldwide, with approximately 283 million admissions. That was a record that the Budd Theatre helped to set with the return engagement. This topped the previous record holder, Gone With The Wind.
