In 1971, the Advertising Council widely circulated a poster, primarily for parents and other adults to help them determine if young people were “abusing drug or using narcotics.” The poster was printed in local newspapers as a public service. The one shown above came from the Lykens Standard, August 5, 1971.

These are a few of the signs that may indicate that a young person could be abusing drugs or using narcotics. While these symptoms are not proof of drug abuse (most could occur for several other reasons), they should serve to alert parents and friends that a problem may exist. If you’re not sure, talk with your family physician. If you suspect, ask your child point blank, “Are you taking drugs?”
It’s a sad thing to have to ask someone you love, but saying “Goodbye” is even sadder still.”
According to the ad, behaviors that could indicate drug use included: (1) wearing sunglasses at inappropriate times; (2) profuse perspiration and body odor; (3) constant blinking of eyes; (4) long sleeve garments worn constantly; (5) constant licking of lips; and (6) drastic weight loss.
