Lykens – 80th Anniversary of United Brethren Church, 1944

Dr. David E. Young

A newspaper portrait of Dr. David E. Young, Conference Superintendent of the East Pennsylvania Conference, United Brethren in Christ. From the Lykens Standard, May 19, 1944. Dr. Young was the featured speaker at the program for the 80th Anniversary of the United Brethren Church at Lykens, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

The article that appeared on that date included the program for the 80th Anniversary, the names and dates of service of the pastors who returned to Lykens for the celebration, and photos of the renovation of the church basement. The program was announced by the current pastor, Rev. Charles P. Walz.

Two of the speakers on the all day program are former pastor Rev. P. E. Fridinger and Dr. David E. Young, Conference Superintendent of the East Pennsylvania Conference, United Brethren in Christ.  Dr. Young will deliver the opening address of the day at the combined Sunday School and Worship Service at 10:00 A. M.  A special feature of this morning service will be the dedication of the newly enlarged and renovated Basement of the Church which has recently been completed.

Following the morning worship a Fellowship Hour will be held with the ladies of the Church serving dinner to all the guests and friends.  It is hoped that all the local people and the guests will co-operate to make this a time for the renewal of old acquaintances and friendship.  Rev. P. E. Fridinger, pastor of the local church from 1930-1935 will take charge of a Prayer and Praise Service beginning at 2:00 P. M., in which time will be taken for reminiscences and greetings from all who wish to take part.  The Christian Endeavor’s have charge of their respective groups at 6:00 P. M. and the day will be closed with an Old-Time Gospel Preaching Service led by Rev. N. I. Fake, pastor in Lykens U. B. Church 1928-1930.  Remembrances of the original congregation will include lighting of the Church with the old oil lamps, singing with the old foot-treadle organ, the occasional use of the Old German songs, and the sitting of the men on one side and the women on the other as the old congregations used to do.

This was the basement underneath the Lykens United Brethren Church in December of 1943.
This the Church Basement now [May of 1944], enlarged and renovated and now ready for Christian Service.
