COLORED TEAMS TO PLAY SERIES HERE NEXT WEEK
The Homestead Grays, considered one of the greatest aggregations of negro baseball players in the country, are scheduled to engaged in a nine-game series with the Baltimore Black Sox in several sections of the country in a Colored World Series. Two of these games will be played in Harrisburg next Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. They will be staged on the Island.
The Grays are rated one of the best independent teams in the country and are made up of players who won their spurs in both the eastern and Western Colored Baseball Leagues.
Their pitching staff is headed by Smoky Joe Williams, the 50-year-old twirler. In a recent twelve-inning game against Kansas City, Williams struck out twenty-seven men. Dalty Cooper, former Harrisburg Giants hurler. Owens, Ross and Britt compose the remainder of the hurling staff.
Oscar Charleston, manager of the Harrisburg Giants when they were in existence, will be on first base for the Grays. Stevens, shortstop; Judy Johnson, third sacker; and Salis, at second, will make up the rest of the infield.
The outfield will be comprised of Cheny White, former Bacharach Giants outfielder, and Harris and Evans, former Eastern Colored Leaguers.
