Mt. Carbon – “Double Black” Covered Bridge, 1905

A 1905 colorized newspaper photograph of the “Double Black Bridge,” a railroad bridge that was in existence from when it was built in 1851 to when it was destroyed by fire on May 29, 1932. It was located at Mt. Carbon, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.

The photo appeared in the “Looking Back” feature of the Pottsville Republican, December 15, 1979, which was presented by Joseph M. Hanney, who was the vice president of the Schuylkill County Historical Society. The photo is from the historical society’s collection. The text was written by Hanney:

Schuylkill County boasted a number of covered bridges, where the roof and sides protected the hard-use roadway or trestle against the ravages of weather, thus adding longer life to the bridge.

The above 1905 photo shows the “Double Black Bridge” in Mount Carbon, built in 1851, and destroyed by fire on May 29, 1932.
