Pottsville – Snyder Family Band, 1930

A photograph taken in 1930 of the Snyder Family Band of Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. The band was well-known in the entire western section of the county, since they often performed there in “parades, picnics, conventions and parties.”

When the photo appeared in the “Looking Back” feature of the Pottsville Republican & Herald, April 13, 2008, the following information was provided by Tom Lowe:

Ed Snyder, my grandfather, and his family lived for many years in the Mount Hope section of Pottsville near the Griffiths AMVETS Post Home.  He and my grandmother raised eight children and started a family band.  All his children, except two sons, played musical instruments.  He enlisted the help of his brother-in-law, Uncle Ray Adams, and a local boy, Murphy Lombel, to take the place of the missing two sons.  The band played all over the city and western part of Schuylkill County in parades, picnics, conventions and parties.  My mother, Grace Laverne [Snyder] Lowe, the youngest, age 10 in the picture, played the lead trumpet.  Members of the band included, from left, Lloyd Snyder (tuba), Edward Snyder (baritone), Murphy Lombel (alto), Lynn Snyder (bass drum), Grace [Snyder] Lowe (lead trumpet), Donald Snyder (trumpet), Ray Adams (snare drum), Anna Pauline [Snyder] Schonauer (alto), and Gene Snyder (cymbals).
