Gladys [Parmer] Sweigard (1921-2022) – Centenarian

GLADYS [PARMER] SWEIGARD

HALIFAX – Gladys Marie [Parmer] Sweigard, died at Viva Assisted Living in Harrisburg at the age of 101 on September 24, 2022. She lived formerly in Halifax, Pennsylvania.

She was born on February 7, 1921 to the late Professor Preston Parmer and Dora [Lubold] Parmer in Kylertown, Pennsylvania.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two sisters, Mildred [Parmer] Ruth and Ruth [Parmer] Umholtz, and her husband, Russell Sherwood Sweigard.

She attended Williamstown Elementary School, Lebanon Valley College, and graduated from Halifax High School.

She and her husband, Russell Sweigard, owned and operated Sweigard’s General Store in Matamoras, Pennsylvania.

Gladys was a Sunday School teacher in the former Matamoras Church of God. She was a painter and creator of sculptured apple dolls, and a substitute school teacher. She was a member of the Halifax Historical Society, Millersburg Art Association, and a life member of the Halifax Alumni Association.

Surviving are daughters Lynnette (Jim) Schlegel and Cindy (Jay) Tobias both of Halifax, five grandchildren Rodney (Holly) Schlegel, Tina (John) Murphy, Sheri (Nathan) Hatalla, Brandi (Ryan) Kinnear, and Jenna (Chris) Tobias, eleven great grandchildren… [and] four great great grandchildren….

She enjoyed travelling in their RV, camping, singing, craft shows, hiking, bicycling, and hunting. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 30, 2022 at Hoover-Boyer Funeral Home, Ltd. – Millersburg from 10:00 AM-11:00 AM. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM, with burial to follow at Long’s Cemetery, Halifax….
