Sarah [Spatzer] Miller (1868-1968) – Almost a Centenarian

MRS. SARAH A. MILLER – CENTENNIAL MOTHER AND OLDEST RESIDENT, DIED

Mrs. Sarah A. Miller, 99, of 115 N. Fourth Street, Tower City‘s oldest resident, died Thursday evening at her home.

Born February 1, 1869, at Frailey Township, she was the daughter of Frederick Spatzer and Sarah [Anspach] Spatzer.

Her husband, Samuel Miller, died in 1922.

Mrs. Miller was the mother of 11 children and step-mother of five. Five of her own children preceded her in death; also the five step children.

She is survived by four daughters: Mrs. Iva Hoover at home; Ella Steinrock, Mrs. Gertrude Cardin, Mrs. Ida Skup, all of Reading; two sons, Ray Miller, at home and Charles Miller of Tower City; one sister, Mrs. Daisey Jones of Massillon, Ohio. There are ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday morning from Stewart Dreisigacker Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles H. Leitzel Jr., pastor of Zion Methodist Church, officiated. Burial was made in Greenwood Cemetery.

Obituary from the West Schuylkill Herald, May 22, 1968, via Newspapers.com.

The portrait of Mrs. Miller is from the Souvenir Book for the Centennial of Tower City and Porter Township, 1868-1978. It appears in the dedication section at the beginning of the book where she is identified as “Our Centenarian: Our oldest resident born February 1, 1869, whom we honor as we celebrate our Centennial.” Unfortunately, Mrs. Miller died three-and-a-half months after her 99th birthday (May 16, 1968) and thus was not actually a centenarian.
