Lloyd was born 29 March 1897, the son of Amos Paul Hartman (1857-1937) and Sarah “Sallie” [Paul] Hartman (1853-1926). His farm was located on land owned by Daniel Ritzman in 1875, just north of Gratz.
A family story is that Lloyd was so cautious with his auto that he would not drive it into his barn, instead stopping the motor short of the barn door, and then getting out and pushing it in.
