Dauphin-Marysville Covered Bridge, 1872

An 1872 print of the covered bridge across the Susquehanna River from south of Dauphin Borough, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, to Marysville, Perry County, Pennsylvania. The view looks west to Cove Mountain, Perry County. The bridge was completed in 1858 in an area of the river known as the Dauphin Narrows.

The Dauphin-Marysville Bridge was abandoned after 1875 when the Pennsylvania railroad took over the operation of the Northern Central Railroad and re-routed its traffic over the Rockville-Marysville Bridge.

The Dauphin-Marysville Bridge fell into decay and had to be removed in the early 20th century, but some of the stone piers remain. On one of those piers, in 1986, a replica of the Statue of Liberty was erected.

The Rockville-Marysville Bridge was rebuilt in 1902 as the largest stone arch bridge in the world. It is still in use today for freight trains and for Amtrak’s passenger service across Pennsylvania.
