Miner Dies After Being Run Over By Mining Car, 1906

From the Lykens Standard, June 22, 1906:

FATAL ACCIDENT AT WILLIAMSTOWN

Peter Malloy, while walking down the separator plane at Summit Branch Colliery, Williamstown, about 5 o’clock Tuesday evening, was so badly injured by a car running over him that he died two hours later.  He was not an employee at the time, having quit work to seek employment in Philadelphia. He had gone to the colliery to draw his time and was on his way to his boarding house when the accident occurred.  Employees rushed to his rescue, but when he was taken out from under the car it was seen that he was seriously injured, and “the first aid to the injured” was given by Mine Foreman Bond.  He was then removed to his boarding house, (the home of Mrs. Boyle) and Dr. Allen summoned.  The doctor rendered medical assistance, but advised that Rev. Father Dougherty be sent for, which was done, and on his arrival the last rites of the church were administered to the dying man.

Deceased was born in Arderaugh, County Donegal, Ireland, about 24 years ago and was the youngest child of Edward Malloy and Katie Malloy.  He came to this country about nine months ago, going directly to Williamstown.  He is survived by his mother and the following brothers and sisters:  John Malloy, who resided at Williamstown awhile; William Malloy, of Wilkes-Barre; James Malloy, of Williamstown; Patrick Malloy in Scotland; Ann Malloy in Ireland; Sarah Malloy, Margaret Malloy and Bridget Malloy of Philadelphia.

The funeral will be held at 9 o’clock this morning at Sacred Heart Church, Williamstown, and interment will be made in the Catholic Cemetery at that place.
