The station agent was the official representative of the railroad in the local community. Agents were responsible for the controlling of train movements. A passenger agent sold tickets and planned itineraries and a freight agent accounted for the shipments of goods. The agent was usually a well-respected member of the local community.
This notification of agent changes appeared in the Lykens Standard, August 29, 1924:
CHANGE OF POSITIONS AT PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD STATION
G. W. Shriver, who for a number of year was employed at the Pennsylvania Railroad station, Halifax, will come to Lykens station tomorrow. He will take the position being held now by Harvey Unger; Unger will go to Williamstown freight station and John Schmuck, now at that place, will come to Lykens and fill the position now held by LeRoy Seifert, and Seifert will either take the position held by Albert Mucher or be compelled to go out on the line.
