Mounting the bronze plaque on the pedestal in front of the G. A. R. Hall on North Second Street in Lykens, in October 1925, completed the Lykens (and Wiconisco) Civil War Monument, erected to honor the memory of those from the area who fought in the Civil War, 1861-1865. However, the news article that appeared in the Lykens Standard, October 9, 1925, describing the tablet, noted that the Woman’s Relief Corps who had sponsored the memorial was still in debt for its erection and the community was urged to erase the debt by donating.
MEMORIAL TABLET COMPLETED THIS WEEK
The bronze tablet in memory of the Boys of ’61-’65, erected by the Heilner Woman’s Relief Corps, which was dedicated on the lawn of the G. A. R. Hall, on July 4, 1925, was finally completed a few days ago by placing the bronze tablet on a beautiful and becoming pedestal.
Have you seen this wonderful piece of workmanship? A little effort to visit the G. A. R. Hall, will give you much pleasure to see the beauty and simplicity of this memorial of shich we all should be very proud. It is one of the most beautiful memorials of its kind to be found for a great distance; and is surely a credit to our town and its people who realize the full value of it, not only the cost in dollars and cents, but that for which it stands – The Memory of the Boys of ’61-’65, who bravely stood for Loyalty, Honor and Liberty.
The community should be and is proud of the Woman’s Relief Corps. The Corps is proud of our community and is very grateful and at this time wishes to express thanks to all its friends and all organizations for thie untiring spirit in which they worked, also for all contributions; but when they bespeak their gratitude for favors past, they are mindful still of an unpaid expense of erecting this beautiful pedestal on which the tablet rests.
It is hoped that the untiring spirit of work and wll doing, and generous contributions will go on a little longer in order that a goodly amount may be realized and the debt be wiped out in the near future.
Some may think they cannot give much, and that little they would do or could would not be missed – No gift is too small to find its way to helpfulness and usefulness, no matter how small or how large. All will be very gratefully received by the Woman’s Relief Corps, who hope their friends will continue to display the same interest and maintain the same generous attitude toward them as been shown since November 1924, when the first movements were afoot for the accomplishment of this high ideal.
