Loyalton – Sunday School Picnic in the Woods, 1924

A photograph of a Sunday School picnic in 1924 n the woods at Loyalton, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.  Only one person in the photograph has been identified – the child in the high chair who is said to be Edward Eugene Bechtel (1923-1963), the son of Clayton Albert Bechtel (1893-1951) and Amy [Snyder] Bechtel (1893-1975).  Presumably, the parents Clayton and Amy are standing behind the child, but which adults are the parents?  Also, Edward Eugene Bechtel had an older sister, Kathryn E. Bechtel (1915-2000) and she might be one of the girls standing near her brother.

A number key is provided below to assist readers in identify the adults and the two children standing alongside the high chair. Edward Eugene Bechtel, in the high chair, is #12.

Some possibilities:

#1 – Perhaps this is the minister of Immanuel Evangelical Church in Loyalton?  According to a listing, there were two ministers who served during the years 1924: Rev. A. E. Miller, served from 1921-1924 and Rev. C. E. Horner, served from 1924-1928.

#3 – Jennie [Miller] Snyder (1874-1953) – She owned the General Store on southeast corner of Main Street and the Crossroads (Oakdale Station Road) and was the grandmother of Edward Eugene Bechtel.

#7 – Melva Sitlinger (1901-1985) – She was working in the Harvey H. Snyder General Store in 1924.

#8 – Harvey H. Snyder (1868-1948) – He owned the General Store on the southeast corner of Main Street and the Crossroads (Oakdale Station Road) and was the grandfather of Edward Eugene Bechtel.

#10 – Elizabeth “Lizzie” Riegle (1872-1942) – She was the sister of Melva Sitlinger‘s mother, Bertha [Riegle] Sitlinger (1879-1952).

Please use the number key when submitting suggested or positive identifications
