Thomas Bowman (1897-1942) – Mine Accident Victim

HELD FUNERAL FOR MINE ACCIDENT VICTIM SATURDAY

Funeral services for Thomas Bowman, 44, of Tower City, who was killed in an accident at an independent mine working last Tuesday [10 March 1942], were held at Tower City Saturday afternoon.  Rev. I. F. Frankenfield, pastor of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, officiated, and interment was made in Greenwood Cemetery, near Tower City.

Bowman, who was working at the face of the slope, was caught and buried when a section of the working caved-in.

Two fellow workers, one of whom was working in the mine some distance from Bowman escaped injury.

Rescue crews recovered the victim’s body about noon on Wednesday.

Bowman was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Bowman, and was a native of Spring Glen, Schuylkill County.  He had however, resided in Tower City most of his life.  He was a World War veteran and served with the 188th Aero Squadron in France.  He was a member of the Wiconisco Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, members of which organization conducted military burial rites Saturday.

Bowman is survived by his wife, Mrs. Clara [Rowe] Bowman; one daughter, June Bowman; three sisters; and two brothers.
