LOSES LIFE DURING ARMY MANEUVERS
Private Alvin Daniel Heckert, of the U.S. Army, son of Daniel N. Heckert of near Berrysburg was killed Friday night, during “blackout: maneuvers of troops from Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
According to word received here, Heckert, who was a member of Company D, 5th Engineers, of Fort Belvoir, was riding on a truck which rolled over an embankment. He sustained a crushed chest.
The young soldier was a son of Daniel N. Hekert and the late Mary [Witmer] Heckert, and was born in Mifflin Township, near Berrysburg, 14 January 1919 He was graduated from the Lykens Valley Vocational High School, Berrysburg, 1936. He had been inducted into the army 13 January 1941.
Survivors are his father; one sister, Catharine Heckert, Mrs. Clair Hoffman, of Matamoras; and five brothers, George Heckert, off San Francisco, California; Ralph Heckert, of Millersburg, R. D.; Paul Heckert, Lewistown; James Heckert, of Enhaut, Pennsylvania; and Mark Heckert, at home.
Funeral services were held from the Hoover Brothers Funeral Home in Berrysburg, at 10:00 o’clock Wednesday morning. Rev. Elmer Dech, pastor of the Pillow Reformed Charge officiated, and interment was made in the Stone Valley Church Cemetery.
