A photograph taken at the Gratz Fairgrounds in 1955 of the family of Abraham “Abe” Gross, who was born in Russia in March 1873 and emigrated to the United States at the age of 16 in 1889. After hearing of plans to build what was to become the Midland Pennsylvania Railroad in the Lykens Valley, he moved to Gratz and established a successful mercantile business there. He became a member of the Gratz Fair Association and had a sulky horse which he raced in competition. Also, he was one of the founders of the Gratz National Bank and was a member of the local Grange.
Abe was married to Rosa Sachs (or Sax), who was also from Russia. At least five of their children were born in Gratz. For reasons not well known, the Gross family moved to Harrisburg prior to World War I.
On the occasion of the Gratz Sesquicentennial in 1955, the Gross family returned to Gratz for a reunion and visit.
