A newspaper photograph of the Back Street Hornblowers of Lykens, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, from the Lykens Standard, June 16, 1944.

Identified in the photo (left to right): Donald Cook; Richard Klinger Jr.; Robert Klinger; Richard Saltzer; and Charles Cook.

According to article that accompanied the photo, the Back Street Hornblowers were the featured local entertainment at the Lykens Valley War Bond Premier, June 22, 1944.

BACK STREET HORNBLOWERS GREET “PIN-UP” GIRL AT WAR BOND PREMIER

The Back Street Hornblowers of Lykens, locally famous musicians, will appear on the stage of the Lyric Theatre, Williamstown, at 8:00 P. M. on Thursday, June 22nd [1944].  These talented young musicians will furnish a half hour of sparkling entertainment as their patriotic contribution to the War Bond Premier being staged on that date.  The Back Street Hornblowers, a group of very talented instrumentalists, feature one of the State’s youngest trombonists – just 13 years old.

The Williamstown High School Band, under the capable leadership of Prof. Schwalm, will assemble at 7:30 and parade to the theatre, where they will render a concert of prelude music.

Following these outstanding stage attractions will be a screen presentation of Betty Grable‘s latest technicolor musical comedy, Pin-Up Girl.  Others in the cast include Joe E. Brown, Martha Raye, Charlie Spivak and his orchestra, the Skating Vanities, and the dancing Condo Brothers.

The Lykens Valley War Bond Premier is presented in the interest of the Fighting Fifth War Loan under the combined sponsorship of the Hollywood Theatre, Elizabethville, the Budd Theatre, Lykens, the Colonnade Theatre, Millersburg, and the Lyric Theatre, Williamstown.

Admission to this outstanding patriotic affair is by War Bond Purchase only, with no tickets being sold at the box office.  A ticket may be secured absolutely free by simply purchasing a bond at local bond issuing agencies.

Since the tickets are being distributed throughout Lykens Valley the number of them is limited locally [in Lykens] and it is suggested that bonds be bought early to secure seats.  The theatre has been charted off in $25, $50 and $100 or higher bond denomination sections and purchasers will be given a ticket corresponding to the value of the bond bought.
