DEATHS – From the Lykens Standard, December 25, 1903:
William Irving, a much esteemed young man, aged 27 years, was badly crushed about the head and body by a fall of coal at Branchdale Colliery on Monday of last week. The unfortunate man was taken to his home at Newtown, where death relieved the sufferer. Deceased leaves a widow and three small children. The funeral was held at 10 o’clock Saturday morning. Interment was made in Clouser’s cemetery. Mr. Irving was a son of George Irving of Tower City, and is well-known here [Lykens], the family having resided in this place a number of years go. He was a member of Branchdale Local U. M. W. A., and Tremont Lodge No. 245 I. O. O. F., which organization attended the funeral. Mrs. Irving is bedfast and in a very critical condition.
The following relatives from this section attended the funeral: William Irving and sister Mrs. Joseph Fotheringill of this place; Benjamin Cox and wife. William Ramsey and wife, William Knight and wife, Williamstown; George Irving and sons Lewis Irving and James Irving of Tower City. Mrs. H. H. Snyder, son Lloyd Snyder, and brother George Irving of Houtzdale.
