Charges Against 1934 Labor Rioters Dropped, 1935

In early 1935, it was reported that charges against three individuals involved in the 1934 shirt factory labor disturbances in Elizabethville and Gratz would be dropped.

From the Lykens Standard, January 18, 1935:

CHARGES RESULTING FROM LABOR DISTURBANCES DROPPED

Charges of inciting to riot against Fred Snyder, of Williamstown, and Charles Welker, of Lykens, were dropped in Dauphin County Court this week at the request of Robert Evitts of Gratz, who brought the charges.

The charges resulted from labor disturbances last October at the R. E. Blyler Shirt factory at Gratz, where Blyler is employed.

From the Lykens Standard, February 8, 1935:

RIOT CHARGES MAY BE DROPPED

Charges of inciting to riot preferred against Jule Lesniak, Allentown, State organizer for the Amalgamated Clothing Workers, during a labor disturbance at an Elizabethville shirt factory on October 19 [1934], may be dropped, it was announced by District Attorney Richards.  The costs in the case were paid to Clerk of Courts Henninger.

The case received considerable attention when Mrs. Gifford Pinchot, wife of the former Governor, posted $500 cash bail to obtain Miss Lesniak’s release from jail after he arrest at Elizabethville.
