Chauncey Riegle – Miner’s Tag

Chauncey Riegle (1870-1936) was a coal miner and farmer who lived in Specktown, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.  When he worked in the mines at the Short Mountain Colliery, he wore the metal tag pictured above, so that in the event of an accident, he could be identified.  Very often the men who went down into the mines knew each other by first name only and because of the large number of men who worked there, they didn’t know details about how the closest relative could be notified.  The mine management did know, and tags such as the one worn by Chauncey were helpful in providing identification.
