Christian Snyder (1838-1930) & Catherine [Kembel] Snyder (1839-1912)

A photograph of Christian Snyder (1838-1930) and Catherine [Kembel] Snyder (1839-1912), taken at the Montgomery Studios at Williamstown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

According to the family history:

Christian Snyder, the first son of John Snyder, was born 14 July 1838 and died on 6 August 1930 at the age of 92.  He was married to Catherine Kembel, daughter of  David Kembel and Lydia [Wert] Kembel.  Catherine was born on 29 May 1839 and died on 20 June 1912.  They are both buried at the Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery, Rough & Ready, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.

Christian Snyder was born in Jackson Township, Dauphin County, near the town of Enders.  In the 1860 census he was still living at home at age 21 with his parents and working as a blacksmith.  According to the estate settlement records of Christian’s grandfather, Jacob Snyder, he was the one who offered the highest bid at the sheriff’s sale for the family property and was granted ownership by the Orphans Court in October 1862.  About that time he married Catherine Kembel since their first child, Sarah Lillian Snyder was born in 1862.

By 1865, Christian Snyder relocated to Lower Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County, where the family became members of the Zion Stone Valley Lutheran and Reformed Church located near the small settlement of Hickory Corners.
