Coaldale – One Arrested in Attempted Burglary, 1906

This story of two men attempting to rob a house in Coaldale, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, was reported in the Lykens Standard of November 23, 1906. One was caught and one got away. The one who was caught refused to give the identity of the other.

HELD FOR ATTEMPTED ROBBERY

On Thursday night of last week, between the hours 10 and 11 o’clock, Mrs. George Forney of Coaldale, discovered a man on the portico of her home attempting to enter the house through the second story window and notified her husband.  Upon his approach he saw a man running away from the portico with a ladder, thus cutting off the escape of the man on the roof, which proved to be George Shamper, a young man of Coaldale. Shamper refused to divulge the name of his partner in the attempted robbery, but suspicion strongly pointed toward Ed Bellon as the man. Mr. Forney appeared before Justice of the Peace w. S. Young and had a warrant issued for the arrest of the two men, which was accomplished by Constable Oscar Hawk on Monday. The men were placed in the lockup awaiting a hearing before ‘Squire Young Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock. At the hearing, no evidence could be produced connecting Bellon with the affair, and as Shamper still refused to peach on his pal, Bellon was released. Shamper was taken to the county jail in the afternoon by Constable Hawk.
