Fatally Injured In Highway Collision
Daniel Heckert, 77, of Berrysburg, was fatally injured early Wednesday afternoon in the collision of a coal truck ad his automobile, on highway Route 25, about one and one-half miles east of Berrysburg.
Mr. Heckert’s car was shoved into a ditch, and he was buried in his car beneath coal which spilled from the truck when that vehicle overturned. After the coal was removed from the badly damaged car, Mr. Heckert was removed by ambulance to the Polyclinic Hospital, Harrisburg, where he died several hours later. He had sustained head and internal injuries.
State Police of the the Lykens substation who investigated the accident stated that the truck was operated by Harry V. Stoneroad, of Millersburg.
Mr. Heckert was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Heckert and was a native of Lower Mahantongo Township, Northumberland County. He had been a resident of the Berrysburg community many years and had retired from farming about three years ago. He was a member of the Stone Valley Reformed Church.
Mr. Heckert’s wife, who was formerly Miss Mary E. Witmer, preceded him in death.
He is survived by five sons and one daughter: George Heckert, of San Francisco, California; Ralph Heckert, Millersburg R.D.; Paul Heckert, Lewistown, Pennsylvania; Mark Heckert, of Berrysburg; James Heckert, of Herndon; and Mrs. Clair Hoffman, of Matamoras. Twenty-five grandchildren. One brother, John P. Heckert, of Boone, Iowa, also survive.
Services will be held from the Hoover Funeral Home, Berrysburg, at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. R. T. Shellhase, pastor of the Pillow Reformed Charge ill officiate and interment will be in the Stone Valley Church Cemetery at Hickory Corners.
Friends may call at the Hoover Funeral Home Saturday evening, from 7 to 9 o’clock.
