Dr. Monroe Daniel Lehr (1860-1937)

Dr. Monroe Daniel Lehr, Lykens, Pennsylvania, was born in Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, 22 July 1860, a son of Henry R. Lehr and Sarah [Lebo] Lehr.

Dr. Monroe Daniel Lehr‘s grandgather, Daniel Lehr, was born in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, and came to Gratz about 1825, where he was engaged in a general merchandise business for twenty years.  He was also for many years postmaster.  He died in Gratz in 1866.

Herny R. Lehr, father of Dr. Monroe Daniel Lehr, was reared at Gratz.  He was for ten years proprietor of the Armstrong Flouring Mills in Jackson Township.  In 1984 he removed to Lykens and engaged in the produce business, which he still carries on.  He is a Republican and belongs to the Lutheran church in Lykens.  He is a member of Wiconisco Encampment and Gratz Lodge, I.O.O.F.  He has a family of three sons and two daughters.

Monroe Daniel Lehr is the eldest of his father’s family.  He was reared in Gratz and Jackson Township and was graduated from the Berrysburg Seminary in 1879, after which he taught school for three years.  He read medicine with his uncle, Dr. W. Lebo of Valley View, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, and studied at Jefferson Medical College, from which he was graduated in 1884.  He practiced medicine five years in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.  In 1889 he came to Lykens, where he now enjoys a large successful practice, succeeding Dr. Meyers.  He belongs to Ashley Lodge, F. & A. M., and Wiconisco Lodge, I.O.O.F.  His politics are Republican.

Dr. Monroe D. Lehr was married in 1884 to Miss E. Kate Enders, daughter of G. W. D. Enders, of Jackson Township.  Their children are:

Gertrude Lehr;

Annie Lehr;

Henry Enders Lehr; and

Earl S. Lehr.

Dr. Monroe D. Lehr is a member of the Reformed church of Lykens and has been a deacon and elder ever since 1891.
