Early History of the Old Stone Church, Elizabethville

An excerpt from the History of the Counties of Dauphin and Lebanon, by William Henry Egle, published in 1883, describing the early history of the Old Stone Church, Elizabethville, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. This excerpt was found in the section on the history of Washington Township:

The Lutheran and Reformed Church was erected in 1833 by the joint labors of the Salem Lutheran and Reformed congregations.  It was built of stone by John Adam Heller, for three hundred dollars.

The building committee on the part of the Lutheran congregation were Simon Sallada, Michael Runk, Ludwig Lingert.

Its Lutheran pastors have been:

  • John Peter Shindel, 1833-1844;
  • J. N. Hemping, 1844-1850;
  • C. F. Walden, 1850-1852;
  • Nathan Jaeger, 1852-1858;
  • F. Waltz, 1853-1864;
  • Jeremiah Shindel, 1864-1870;
  • Thomas T. Steck, 1870-1875;
  • R. S. Wagner, 1875-1881;
  • Joseph Hilpot, 1881, who is the present incumbent.

The Reformed pastors have been, Reverends:

  • Isaac Gerhart;
  • N. E. Bresler;
  • G. B. Lesher;
  • —- Kratzling;
  • A. S. Stauffer, present incumbent, who was called in 1876.

The Reformed Sunday-school superintendent is James Miller.
